A top-notch member of SeeD who now serves as Squall's instructor.
A SeeD cadet at the age of 15, Quistis now instructs Squall and his companions at Balamb Garden. Contrary to her cool and bold exterior, she occasionally has a difficult time coping with frustration, and as a result can become depressed over trivial matters.

Simply put, Quistis is Garden's star pupil and prodigy. By obtaining SeeD rank at the early age of 15 and becoming an Instructor at 17, Quistis has led a life of accomplishment; this same life has its own consequences, as Quistis has been forced to mature and grow up faster than any of her peers. She is only slightly older than her own students (in fact, Quistis and Seifer are the same age, with only a few months separating them), but has managed to earn their admiration and respect.

However, despite her outward appearance, Quistis suffers from the same dilemma most teenagers her age do: she is in constant doubt of herself, and often questions her motives. She seems to go back and forth between her polar personalities - one minute she is giving commands to her peers, and the next she seems uncertain; one minute she's using her intelligence to get the group out of trouble, and the next she acts completely and utterly irrational. She seems to be constantly fighting herself inwardly and can be described as on the edge of some emotional see-saw. She has tried conveying her emotions to Squall, but where did that get her? After that incident, I believe Quistis became even more secluded than usual; even as she is demoted to the status of her students and is constantly fighting side-by-side by her comrades, she still remains somewhat closed in her relationships.

I find it disheartening that often times because of this same attitude that writers in the fanfiction world give her the title "Ice Queen," especially since Quistis is often associated with the ice-elemental GF Shiva. True, Quistis can at times be very cool and indifferent, but put yourself in her shoes. She has given up most of her teenage years, most of which would have been spent doing something other than instructing those who are of her same age; as a result, she has not had much time to actually form close relationships to her peers, since most of them are her students - how else is she supposed to act around them besides professionally?

All in all, Quistis is one of my favorite characters because she is so human. She displays characteristics of everyone at any point in time in our periods of confusion and frustration. Despite all of her apparent but common flaws, Quistis still remains an important and pivotal member of your team.
